Tours & Training: Instructor Training

Instructors, getting started is easy! Below you will find useful tools and resources to help you incorporate Mastering into your course. Student support is also available on our website.

How-To Video Tours

How-To Videos quickly teach you how to create your first course, set up your first assignment, access the gradebook, view diagnostic data, and more. After logging in to MasteringBiology, instructors can view How-To Video Tours from the home page. The videos are approximately two minutes each.

User Guide

The Interactive User Guide is designed to help you navigate through your course. Here you will find not only step by step instructions, but also helpful tips in your implementation of Mastering with your students.

Interactive Training Videos

Interactive training videos allow instructors to watch an experienced user explain the steps involved in some of the most common Mastering tasks and offer viewers a chance to practice these tasks with feedback.

Live Online Training Workshop

60-minute WebEx sessions: Learn how to use Mastering from the comfort of your home or office. Workshops are intended for North American-based higher education Mastering adopters.

Available WebEx topics for college instructors include:

  • Getting Started with MasteringBiology: Covers creating your first course, setting up an assignment, accessing the gradebook, reviewing Best Practices, and getting support.

  • Best Practices in MasteringBiology — Intermediate: Assumes understanding of course & assignment creation and basic gradebook usage. Covers applying learning outcomes to track student progress against course objectives, utilizing student performance diagnostics, and modifying (editing, importing, and creating) assignable content.

  • Measuring Your Students' Learning: Gathering & Analyzing Student Success Data: With increasing focus on program assessment and accountability, Pearson offers support for instructors interested in quantifying their impact on student learning. In this session, you'll explore topics such as how to get started with gathering and analyzing your student success data, what to consider, and helpful tools provided by Pearson. Experienced Mastering users will share their experience with student success data and the impact it had on their teaching.

  • Creating & Customizing Content (90 minutes): Learn how to edit and create Mastering content. Covers both the Simple and Advanced editors and includes working with variables, randomization, and significant figures, as well as more advanced question types, such as labeling.

  • New Mastering Features: Learn what's new in the December 2012 Mastering release. Topics include copying assignments and files to multiple courses, adaptive study modules for select titles, gradebook improvements and a new content indicator.

Requirements: You'll need a computer with a broadband Internet connection and a phone to call into the toll-free (US) conference line. WebEx sessions are limited to 12 attendees to optimize the workshop experience.

Training sessions are tailored for you and your colleagues to use MasteringBiology. Schedule an on-campus faculty training session with your local technology sales specialist. Ask about our First Day of Class student orientation. Contact your local Pearson sales representative for more information.

Faculty Advisors Offering Peer-to-Peer Assistance

Communicate with college instructors experienced in teaching with MasteringBiology. Faculty Advisors are available to share their instructional strategies with educators interested in incorporating MasteringBiology into their courses.
